Indonesian Surf Travel - Mentawai Islands Boat Trip
In April of 2006 I set off on a 16 day trip with a couple of friends to the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra. Leading up to the trip I did alot of research on how to prepare for the unknown. The trip was virtually charter boat based with only a couple days on land at the beginning and end of the trip. Granted, on-board accomodations were plush by local standards. Still, I wanted to be prepared.

Some important things to pack are light cotton long sleeve shirts and pants, a couple wide brim hats (the sun is intense along the equator). Plenty of waterproof sunblock; 50 spf would be recommended. Take along reef booties, the low cut, split toe kind work great. Powdered vitamin packets that dissolve in water, energy bars and sea sick aids would be a good idea if you are prone to motion sickness.

Mosquito repellant with Deet! This is a must, especially if you will be on land in the evenings. The mosqitoes are relentless at dusk and dawn. The main concern is in populated areas where mosquitoes can easily feed from one person to another possibly spreading malaria along the way. While on the boat you still need to be vigilant, wear your long clothes and lather up with repellant, but you can relax a bit. Make sure you have some lights on to keep an eye out for mosquitoes. The main ones to watch out for have the ‘tiger stripes” on the wings. At dusk you will notice campfire smoke wafting up through the trees along from the island villages. The locals do this to keep the “mozzies” at bay. Do some research on anti-malarial drugs and consult your doctor.

Bring along a first aid kit. If you travel with someone who works in the healthcare industry have them bring sutures, anesthetic, etc… If not get ahold of some if you can, there is bound to be someone on the boat who is experienced in stitching. Take butterfly bandages to help close up any cuts from the reef while out of the water.

Speaking of the water (from the hotel or restaurant plumbing). Don’t drink it. Go bottled. Period. End of topic.

For the start of your trip you may want to consider a sleep aid depending how far you are traveling. I flew out of San Diego stopping in Japan, Singapore and Central Sumatra before landing in Padang. It was just about 24 hours worth of flying over about a couple day period. The flight was long and almost unbareable toward the end. Consider taking along something such as Ambien or go natural with Melatonin. Remember not to drink alcohol while taking a sleep aid. Consult with your doctor.

So to recap on first aid supplies and other suggestions keep the following on your list:

Quality Cloth Medical Tape, Bandages & Latex Band Aids, Second Skin, Sleeping Pills, Betadine, Hydrogen Peroxide, Lomotil or other Anti-Diarrhea, Anti-Biotic Ointment, Anti-Fungal Powder, Aspirin, Sun Block & Lip Block and Sunburn Lotion.

When traveling to this region of the world along the equator, it is very important to research and prepare for the climate and local customs. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world and their religious customs run deep. You will most likely not run into fanitical Muslims who harbor great resentment for Westerners. You may want to avoid areas in Jakarta, Timor though. The Indonesian people are largely warm and welcoming; the epitome of happiness and a great many of them are dirt poor! We could learn alot from them.

When in public it is considered respectful to wear long pants as exposing alot of skin, even for men, is considered somewhat inappropriate. If you are a surfer and want to wear shorts in the high, heat high humidity. Go ahead, they will usually understand however; do not enter into any religous site or otheriwise religously significant location in your baggies.

I hope this has been of value, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

How To Save Airfare Money Tips.
Competition in the airline industry has pushed down some airline fares to incredibly reasonable prices. The key word in the previous sentence being “some.” What if the fares for where you want to go are painfully high? Well, if you can be flexible about when you travel, your chances of finding a bargain airfare are very good. Pick off-peak seasons to go to your destination. Not only will airfare be cheaper during off-peak times, but so will your hotel and car rental. You ll also benefit from lighter crowds. If you can be flexible about when you go, traveling during off peak seasons (for your destination) is the best way to get a good deal. Explore alternate days of the week and times of day to travel. Even moving a flight from morning to afternoon or from Monday to Tuesday can save you significant dollars. When booking online or going through a travel agent, don t use specific dates, but rather give a timeframe of when you would like to travel. Then you can see the full variety of fares available. Use alternative airports. Most major metropolitan areas have more than one airport serving them. Traveling to and/or from the lesser used airports can make a big impact on your fare. If you re concerned about winding up too far from your intended destination, check with your travel agent. Many airports are connected by airport bus, getting you swiftly and easily from one regional airport to another. Believe it or not, you can have a blast traveling to some of the hottest and exciting places in the world and party with awesome people from all over the world for just a few hundred dollars! Yes, it s true. You don t have to spend thousands of dollars just to get out of your home and take a fun vacation…in fact, there are ways you can start to travel all around the world with interesting and single people just like you for a very affordable price. The latest headlines are often what many travelers use as benchmarks to help decide which airline to choose. Recent accidents, crashes, mechanical problems, labor disputes, delays, financial difficulties and so on, are hot fodder for the media. No one planning a trip wants to go anywhere near an airline that is having even a hint of these kinds of troubles. Get a good night’s rest before you start. And remember that hunger and lack of exercise can contribute to the fatigue caused by driving for long periods of time. Know where you can stop, eat, exercise, and nap before you leave. And that is exactly what my guide is all about!

Death to the Corporate Techie
How many times must I shake my bells, And kiss thy low brow, dismal caricature? How many shafts, O my quiver be lost, Ere I hit the impalpable, mystical mark? We shall wear out our souls in cunning design and demolish many touted the late great Baudelaire over one hundred and fifty years ago. Anger, disdain, and contempt for what was he so enthralled on? Well, in all due respect, I use the epic poet to perhaps shed a glimmer of light on a pathetic situation which has affected not only my small company but a few of my client s as well. I want to simply point out a few facts about network services, technical support and what you get when dealing with a certain large enterprise operation and a medium size service provider, which I don t feel the need to mention, (eh hem Ti^^# W^RN#R and Arrrrrrr..), that may just be suffering from growing pains. (advertisement) Shop for Women’s Swimwear, Sexy Dresses and Bikinis at MyShopGirl.com. My company, Netricks, Inc. is small, so small in fact that I know almost all two hundred and fifty clients on a first name basis. Yes 250, most here in the beautiful San Joaquin Valley. We are so small that my three full time engineers, my two coders, graphic designer and two in house clerical staff members are proficient with either network or web related design. We have a system of checks and balances in place that we can answer most problems and issues quickly without leaving the customer waiting and waiting for answers and resolutions. However, we end up relying on larger corporations for numerous services which we cannot possible provide. Let s face it, we can t do everything. We need the infrastructure that the larger corps and enterprise outfits offer. Now the main point I want to protrude is how intertwined everything actually is between e-mail hosting and Internet service. That is where the common problem occurs. As well as networking and superior technical services, Netricks offers true hosting solutions for web design, database development, e-commerce and e-mail. We are not an ISP (Internet Service Provider.) For the most part, we rely on the AT&Ts and SBCs to provide that service. Although there are excellent smaller outfits here locally that give much better person to person service, like Integrity Networks run locally by Rod Caglia. Integrity, like Netricks is small enough that its top employees are all efficient and hands on. Every employee is a top employee. Whoever you speak with there will for the most part be able to offer you expert service and support. Technical issues get handled immediately and without delay because they know their equipment and can easily handle their offerings. In my experience, the larger companies promote their top engineers and the technical support gets handled by younger, less experienced personnel. I have witnessed several such cases recently where the ISP improperly routed multiple e-mail systems and my clients were unable to send and receive e-mail from certain hosts. In their minds, it all pointed to Netricks as the culprit to the problem, since it is Netricks that handles their e-mail service. Yet, as most network engineers understand, it is the ISP s responsibility to rout e-mail properly. If there are issues with the ISP s domain name services infrastructure, problems will exist with routing e-mail; that is a fact. My expert engineers pointed this problem out to multiple technicians at these un-named organizations. And the ISP techs could not find any problems. Hmmmph, imagine that. Over and over again they blamed us (Netricks) for the miss-routed e-mail. Now I service over 250 companies with my e-mail system and the only clients that were suffering from the routing difficulties were the clients that used that certain ISP Un-named company (out of RESPECT). Coincidence? I think not! Over and over I met with my clients telling them that we would get to the bottom of the situation. I tried to assure them that the problems were not due to our e-mail system and that we would work with their ISP to resolve the issues at hand. Every time my engineers would call the ISP, a trouble ticket would be opened, of course. We would have to sit on our asses and wait for them to call us back. Usually they would get back to us the next day. Tick tock tick tock Multiple times they would tell my techs that they found a problem and fixed it and multiple times the problem would persist. Call after call, day after day the issues remained and we were the ones left waiting in the wings, feeling the pressure, looked at as the damned. Yet our hands were actually tied. Finally we would get the issue escalated to the next level tech at the ISP? Over and over again these issues went on. It took weeks to finally resolve. And in the end, our original remarks about the issues with the ISP were absolutely correct. It took weeks of problematic service and countless calls to the Internet Service Provider in order to finally get the issues escalated. That was the hard part. Once we got the trouble ticket beyond their low-level technical support and into the hands of a qualified engineer *** Poof *** the problems went away. They finally listened. Why was it so difficult? I tell you, growth can kill. It is not I that wishes death upon the corporate techie, for they are indeed good for my business. Yet, I believe that it should be important to small companies like mine and also large to higher qualified support all the way down the ladder. And I leave you with a mystical thought from the Old Great, yet in a modern flavor: If you haven t hope, one strange experienced hope, That Death, like a new sun afloat in the sky, Will cause the flowers of their [Corporate] brains to bloom! The Echoes of Baudelaire neigh ricochet as swift as the keys falling on deaf ears. We can only attempt to influence the layman s ways with truth, however un-poetic it may indeed be. Perhaps they will listen next time, perhaps. Nonetheless, I hope they read and learn. Have a nice day fair ladies and gentlemen. Migrant boost fills Australian skills shortage
The ranks of Australia’s skilled workers have been boosted by almost 78,000 in the past year in an effort to solve the country’s skills shortage. It’s the largest intake of skilled migrants since the late 1980s. Australian Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said the government had responded to the shortage by bringing record numbers of skilled migrants to the country. The Australian Government has made over 97,500 Skilled Visas available for 2005-06. In recent months over 150,000 jobs have been advertised weekly, and unemployment is at the lowest level in the last 10 years. Australian Government statistics confirm 89% of Skilled Independent Visa holders gain employment within the first six months. A total of 18,700 migrants took advantage of the state-specific and regional migration program, with 7,100 settling in Victoria and almost 5,000 calling South Australia home - an increase of almost 140 per cent in SA on 2003-04 figures. When it came to specific skills, the biggest increase came in the form of doctors, with 260 migrating to Australia in 2004-05 ” this is a 300% increase on previous year. A Senior Migration Agent from National Visas said that accountants, nurses and trades-people, including mechanics, electricians and builders, are among the most sought-after skills wanted by Australian employment groups.
